I will reveal more about the nature of Kris and Brian's relationship in the next chapters, but as for Adam, he had not heard from Kris in over a year and the last time he saw Kris, he was on the verge of a breakdown. So I thought a bit of awkwardness would be appropriate. Add the fact that he still has feelings for Kris and up until Kris confessed that he was not over him, Adam thought Kris had moved on, and so he probably wasn't sure how he should act around the man who was still his husband yet belonged to somebody else now.
