Summary: He was at the peak of his career. She just trying to get her future started. What happens when their worlds collide?
Chapter 5:
Supernatural production was shut down for a week, so I had a week all to myself. I had a week to be away from the set and the craziness of my job. I had a week to bury myself in the cemetery project I wanted to do for a long time. I had a week to spend with my brother. I had a week to power watch my Criterion DVD movie collection. I had a week to get over the feelings I was developing for Jensen in my heart before going back to work and facing him. Could it be possible that at the end of the next week I would think back at my feelings for Jensen and laugh at my stupid infatuation? That was pretty much the plan.
I was back from my last day at work before the hiatus and was walking to our door when Wendy called.
“Hey girl!” I heard her cheerful voice over the line.
“Hi Wen,” I said as I tried to hold the phone secure between my ear and shoulder and at the same time, look for my keys inside my messy bag, “How have you been?”
“Still buried deep in the photojournalism project,” she sighed, “How about you?”
Ha! There were my keys, tangled up with my earphones. I started to untangle the mess as I talked to Wen.
“Just arrived home. I’m finally going to start my one week break.”
“Lucky you! Listen, Jensen just called.”
My hand froze over the keys.
“And?”
“He asked for your AIM screen name. He said he is going to miss you over the vacation and wanted to talk to you. He said he has forgotten to get your number and screen name at the set today.”
I shut my eyes closed and squeezed the keys in my hand.
“I really don’t understand his deal.”
“What does that mean?”
“Isn’t he sick of my face yet?” I bitched, “For the past two weeks, I‘ve had my camera practically shoved down his throat almost every day. Isn’t he sick of that? Now he wants to hear from me during his break too?”
“It’s his way of showing he cares,” Wen scolded me, “What’s your problem?”
I sighed. I was not sure I could explain my complicated feelings to anyone, not even myself.
“Nothing. I just…I’m not used to this, Wen.”
“Do you want me to turn him down? I can tell him I wasn’t able to get a hold of you,” suggested Wen.
God! Why are you doing this to me?
“Elle? You there?”
“Um…yeah.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“I don’t know, Wen. I honestly don’t know.”
“Listen, you need to let your guard down for a while, OK? The boy seems crazy about you.”
“How do you know about that?”
“I just do, trust me. I have been around him long enough to know about it. I’ve seen him with other girls, you know?”
“Even with that girl who I have heard has broken his heart to pieces?”
“How do you know about her? Did he tell you about Lisa?”
“No, I have just heard around.”
“Yes, even with Lisa. I have seen those two together, and it was not a very pretty sight.”
“Wen, I just don’t think I am ready for anything like that now.”
“You are just scared, Elle.”
“After everything that happened with Peter, don’t you think I have a right to be scared?”
“Of course, you do, but you are building a wall around yourself, and if you are not careful, one day you are just going to wake up and see the wall is too high for anyone to cross past it. This might be your chance, you hear me?”
Maybe Wendy was right. Maybe I was building a wall around myself. After Peter, I could not even think about dating again. I had pushed that aspect of my life to the back of my head for almost a year, and everything seemed to be OK or was that what I wanted to make everyone, including myself, believe? Could Wendy be right? Was I ready to let go of everything I had locked somewhere deep inside?
“You need to let go of your safety blanket at one point, you know? You are getting way too comfortable in that, and you know that’s not healthy.”
“Wen?”
“Hmm?”
“When did you turn to a psychologist?”
She laughed.
“So what is it gonna be?”
“Alright. Give him my ID.”
“That’s my girl! Alright. Listen, one more thing.”
“Oh, God! Now what?”
“The girls and I are going to have a night out this week. Are you in?”
“Sure. Just let me know when and where.”
“OK. I’ll get back to you once I know. I’d better go back to the dark room.”
“Alright. Take care.”
“You too,” said Wen as she hung up.
The plan was pretty much screwed!
************************************************
Later that night, I was watching Traufaut’s Jules Et Jim on my laptop when an IM window jumped open.
Jensen: Hi Elle. How r u lady?
I did not know whether I should panic or smile at the thought that Jensen had not wasted even one night to add me to his IM list. I hit the movie on pause and started typing.
Elle: Hi, I'm good. How r u?
Jensen: Good. U have NO idea how good it feels to not have to be anywhere near work at the crack of dawn.
Elle: LOL. I know the feelin’.
Jensen: I totally forgot about askin’ u for your ID myself. I'm happy there is someone named Wen. :D
That brought me a smile to my face and warmth to my heart.
Elle: That's OK. How's the break so far?
Jensen: I had 2 drop Jared off at the airport. He's gone back 2 Texas 2 see his family.
Elle: Oh, good. How about u? Why haven't u gone back to Texas?
Jensen: Mom & dad are in Europe. No one home to go to. :(
Elle: Oh poor baby!
Jensen: Yeah. I’m stuck here with his dogs!
Jensen: I might go out tonight with some of the guys though.
Jensen: Have a couple of drinks, just relax, and maybe catch a hot girl or two ;)
Elle: Well, you have earned it.
Jensen: God, I haven’t asked for a girl’s number in ages. I am totally rusty in that area. :P
Was that a hint? Was I missing something?
Jensen: Am I too old for that?
Elle: No, I don’t think so! Better late than never, right? ;)
Jensen: What's your plan? Aren't you going back to Eunice for the break?
Elle: Not really.
Elle: I have a few things to do before going back to work.
Elle: Go to the movies, start a new photography project, attend the opening night of a friend's exhibition.
Elle: That's pretty much the plan.
Jensen: WOW, you never quit, do you? LOL Go out girl, have some fun.
Elle: Not really my cup of tea at the moment.
Jensen: If you were a boy, I would take you out with me tonight with the boys. It would do you some good.
Elle: LOL. Thanks. That's flattering.
Jensen: Oh well, you know what I mean. :D
Elle: I know :-)
Jensen: What movie are you going to go watch?
Elle: There is this small move theater close by. They have a special “Cinema of Russia” program this month. I’m going to watch Nostalgia.
Jensen: Andrei Tarkovsky?
Elle: That’s the man! YES! Have you seen it? :D
Jensen: Not yet.
Elle: Do it! You will love it. It’s a masterpiece.
You can come watch it with me!
Jensen: U really weren’t kidding when u said u r a movie buff, were u?
Elle: Nope. It was the God’s honest truth. :P
Elle: Do you know the story?
Jensen: Story of what? The movie?
Elle: Yeah.
Jensen: No, and don’t tell me. I wanna make my own opinion of it.
Elle: OK. Lemme know what you think of it when you go see it.
Jensen: I really need a partner for almost everything, for motivation, you know? ;)
Jensen: Especially if it is a sexy beautiful lady! I will go to the end of the world with such a partner, let alone to the movies. ;)
I just stared at the screen, not knowing what to answer to that. Was he flirting with me again? Was that his way of asking me out? Was it a simple friendly chat? What was I supposed to answer to that?
Jensen: Have u heard about Anna?
Well, at least I did not have to say anything about what he had just said.
Elle: No, why?
Jensen: She never mentioned the camp again. I was wondering what happened.
Elle: I never asked her.
Elle: I didn’t want to pry.
Jensen: Yeah, me either.
Jensen: Maybe she is not ready for that change in her life yet.
Jensen: If you are not ready for it, with all your being, it won't happen.
Jensen: Do you remember the look on her face when I mentioned Young Life?
Elle: How can I forget?
Jensen: I am absolutely livin’ 4 such moments. Nothing makes me feel more alive.
Elle: That’s cute. :)
Jensen: For God’s sake, woman! Don’t call me cute! I’m a man, not a kitten!
Elle: LMAO! OK! That’s…sexy!
Two can play the game, right?
Jensen: That’s MUCH better! :D
Jensen: Srsly! I wish I had a picture of moments like that in my life.
Jensen: I was going through some of my old pictures tonight.
Jensen: I noticed I don’t have enough pictures left of the most memorable moments of my life.
Jensen: I don’t have even one picture left of some of my best friends from my childhood.
Elle: Well, as long as you keep them alive in your heart, that’s more than enough.
Jensen: No, that’s not enough. Out of sight, out of mind, you know?
Jensen: Plus, you can’t keep everything in your mind. Your memory can memorize only so much. You tend to forget.
Elle: Sometimes, but only sometimes, not always.
Jensen: Hmmm….
Jensen: Can I ask you a question?
Elle: Sure.
Jensen: Do you know what SLR stands for?
SLR? What in the world did he want to know about SLR cameras?
Elle: What are you doing over there?
Jensen: Reading digital cameras specifications. I just can't figure out what SLR means.
Elle: It means Single Lens Reflex. Why?
Jensen: I finally made my mind about photography. Now I am looking for the perfect camera.
Jensen: Can I steal from your knowledge about these things?
Jensen: Just a little bit… from time to time?
Elle: Sure, what do you want to know?
*************************
After an hour of chatting about lenses and different camera brands, I was ready to pass out and I had a feeling Jensen's head was about to explode.
Elle: I think that's enough information for one night.
Elle: Don't you think?
Jensen: I think you guys have the absolute second most exciting job in the world.
Elle: Oh, yeah?
Elle: And what is the first most exciting job?
Jensen: Being a porn star! :P
Elle: Is that Jensen talking or Dean talking?
Jensen: Oh baby, it's absolutely me!
Jensen: And a little whisky, of course!
Elle: "The greatest pleasure isn’t sex, but the passion with which it is practiced. When the passion is intense, then sex joins in to complete the dance, but it is never the principal aim."
Jensen: Paolo Coelho?
Elle: What is it with you and Jared, knowing every sentence of his books?
Jensen: I've heard Jared reciting that sentence a few times.
Jensen: I have read his Alchemist, but he doesn't seem that wise to me.
Elle: Why not?
Jensen: I don't know. His world is different, different from our reality.
Jensen: I think he is living something different.
Elle: Maybe.
Elle: But that world can be anyone's world.
Jensen: That's my problem exactly.
Elle: What is?
Jensen: This word: CAN!
Jensen: How many times has your world been like that? Even remotely close to what he is talking about?
Elle: I believe it is possible, if you really want it to be.
Elle: As the Bible says: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
Elle: Change is hard. It won't happen overnight, but I believe it is possible.
Jensen: There was a time and place when this issue was my life; but now…now even Bible seems like a simple joke from a smart guy!
Jensen: At the beginning of every book, these writers try to convince you that you are living a wrong life, that you should live a different one, and that you should change.
Jensen: I am happy where I am. I don't want to change.
Elle: Well, then it won't happen.
Elle: If you are not ready for it, with all your being, it won't happen.
Elle: You just said so yourself!
Jensen: But I'm not a porn star yet.
Jensen: Elle?
Jensen: You there?
Elle: I’m here, Jensen.
Jensen: I know what you must be thinking.
Elle: What am I thinking?
Jensen: You are thinking what a two-faced bastard I am, right?
Jensen: You’re thinking ‘This guy seems so serious and gentleman at work. Now suddenly, he has changed to a flirting bastard’.
Jensen: Am I right?
Elle: Wrong actually.
Jensen: I am?
Elle: Yes.
Elle: I have a brother here at home, remember?
Elle: I know all the symptoms.
Elle: I know that act you are hiding yourself behind. I see right through it.
Elle: That’s exactly how Eric gets when he lies to himself when he is hurt somehow.
I waited for his answer.
And it did not come.
Elle: Jensen?
Elle: Jensen, are you there?
I panicked. He was not answering, but according to AIM, he was still online. Was he mad? Was I out of line?
I picked up my phone and dialed.
“Wen?”
“Hey, Elle. What is it?”
“I think I screwed things up with Jensen.”
“What do you mean?”
“We were…we were talking about girls and I told him…I made a comment about how I can see through his act since I have seen all the symptoms in Eric before…and that I know he is probably lying to himself about the whole thing, and…and then suddenly he got quiet. He is not answering back anymore.”
“Oh wow!”
“I know. What should I do?”
“Call him, dummy!”
“I don’t have his number, just an ID.”
“OK, lemme text his number to you.”
“Maybe you should ask him about it first. I mean…he might not be comfortable about it.”
“Elle! Do you want to fix this or not?”
“Yes!”
“OK, done. I just sent it. Now go call him!”
“Thanks Wen. You are a life saver!”
I hit the disconnect button, and then dialed Jensen’s number.
Damn it! Pick up the phone!
He did not pick up his phone and it went straight to his voice message. I shut the phone off.
Way to go, Elle, way to go! Damn you and your big mouth! Couldn’t you keep your thoughts to yourself? Did you have to go all wise and knowing on the poor man? It is not your business. He is not your friend, not officially!
Jensen: Elle? You there?
I did not know whether to be relieved or terrified. At least he was talking to me again! But…what was he going to say?
Elle: Yeah, I am here.
Elle: You scared me for a minute here.
Jensen: What? Why?
Elle: I think what I said, about you and your life, was way out of line. It’s none of my business.
Elle: Are you mad at me?
Elle: I’m sorry.
Jensen: What are you talking about? Of course I am not mad, lady.
Elle: Didn’t you get my last message?
Jensen: I did, but then my stupid laptop froze on me. I had to reboot.
I sighed in relief.
Jensen: It's too late for philosophical discussions anyways. Even my laptop knows that! LOL
Elle: Oh God! And here I was, panicked that I’ve gotten you mad. I even called Wen and got your number.
Elle: I called to apologize.
Jensen: So that was you, calling? I didn’t recognize the number, so I didn’t answer.
Jensen: Sorry.
Elle: It’s OK. :)
Jensen: And I don’t know about your bro, but I am not lying to myself, not even a little bit.
Jensen: I can prove it to you!
Jensen: Do you want me to strip for you, right here, right now?
Oh God! This is so not happening!
Elle: Let’s not talk about it anymore.
Jensen: Damn!
Elle: :-?
Jensen: I totally missed the chance to talk to a sexy lady on the phone tonight! :(
Elle: LMAO! Who did you think you were going to talk to? Megan Fox?
Jensen: Baby, Megan Fox is nothing but a porn star. She does not even hold a candle to you.
Oh God! Deep breath, Elle, deep breath! In…out! In…out!
Jensen: I missed the chance to talk to our nicest crew member that everybody seems to love.
Jensen: I had the chance to talk to our professional cheerful photographer, who always has the sweetest smile on her face.
Jensen: Who I can talk to for hours and hours and never get tired.
Jensen: And I blew it! :(
Elle: God, you are too good for my ego, boy!:D
Elle: Srsly, I’m sorry I got your number without asking you first. I just wanted to make sure we were alright.
Jensen: Of course, we are. I want you to have it. I am going to text the house number to you 2. Just in case, you know? ;) It might come in handy one day.
This was really happening, wasn’t it?
Elle: If you insist.
Jensen: So are you going to call?
Elle: Now?
Jensen: Why not?
Elle: It’s getting late, Jensen!
And you are drunk, just a little bit!
Jensen: So?
Elle: So I thought you were going out with ur buddies.
Jensen: And miss the chance to talk to you? Nah! Changed my mind. I’m staying in tonight.
Elle: You’re unbelievable!
Jensen: I'm not! I just know a classy artist lady, when I see one!
Jensen: Are you going to call or not?
Elle: Should I?
Jensen: Come on! Don’t play games with me. I’m too tired for that.
Jensen: Please?
Jensen: I’ll go, sit by the phone and keep waiting for ur call, ‘til morning, if I have 2.
I took a deep breath and dialed his number.
“YES! I won!” he excitedly said as soon as he picked up the phone and I could not help laughing. I could see him through the phone, doing a little happy dance.
“Yeah…yeah, you did. Happy now?” I said as I turned the laptop off.
“Much!” he happily answered.
“Good. I’m going to hang up now then.”
“What?? Wait!”
“Jensen, it’s pretty late.”
“Do you need to be somewhere in the morning?”
“No.”
“Good, neither do I. So, we can talk some more.”
It was about two o'clock in the morning when we finally said goodbye and went to bed.
